Itinerary 2: Katinda Cliff-Twin Lakes (2 hours)
This walk takes you up to the Katinda Cliff. This time, you descend to the twin lakes of Katinda and Murambi and cross the Ismuth separating the 2 lakes. Here you will try out fishing in the lakes and then climb out of the valley on the South Eastern side of Lake Murambi. You will see and if time allows, participate in the process of making local brew called “tonto” an extract from a type of bananas.
The hike takes you through a densely populated section of Murambi village where you will interact with the local community as they go about their daily chores. Here you will see gardens of Coffee, Cotton, Bananas, and other legumes like Beans and Ground Nuts, all organically grown.
You come out at Ruriba Trading centre. Here you will see the “3rd Command View”-a high point which folklore says was used as an observatory post to look out for hostile tribes. You complete your 2 hour walk here and you will be picked by your vehicle and taken back to the Information Centre.
Itinerary 3: Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Walk 2-3 hrs
A short drive from the Information Centre takes you to Kasyoha –Kitomi forest, which is part of the network of protected areas that form the largest area of protected land in the Albertine Rift. The diversity of the region is fantastic and Kitomi Forest contributes a great deal to that. The main attractions in the reserve include primates such as chimpanzees, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus, vervet monkeys and baboons. The reserve also boasts of spectacular crater lakes such as twin lakes of Kamweru and Kyema as well as the “transparent” lake Kamunzuku. You will also have an opportunity to take part in the Indigenous Tree Conservation Program.
Other attractions in the reserve include:
You complete your forest walk with a visit to Ndekye Women’s group for handicrafts. From here you will be picked by your vehicle and return to the Information centre.
INDIGENOUS TREE CONSERVATION PROGRAM
As part of the Forest Walk, you will have a chance to plant your own tree on land adjacent to the Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve. This program aims at preserving and re-establishing indigenous trees that are disappearing fast yet they are of very high value to the community. Some of these trees have medicinal value and are difficult to replace. The idea here is to involve tourists in preserving these trees through tree planting.
By participating in this program, you will sponsor a tree, and make sure that our team will take care of it so that it grows. The different trees proposed were chosen because they are getting rarer each year or because they are very fragile and need good care to grow. To help us recognize your tree, we will put a little plaque at its base with your name on it. You will then be proud to own a tree in Uganda, and overall to participate in our conservation program.
